TARLAC [San Jose Circuit]

Mt. Kawayan, San Jose, Tarlac, Philippines
It may look like something that isn’t risky but you should be a hundred percent sure of this feat when you jump between these two protruding rocks. One mistake and you’ll fall off a cliff.

✈️🛳🚌 How to get to San Jose, Tarlac:
⏺ Ride a bus that passes by Tarlac City Siesta Bus Terminal (e.g. Victory Liner; travel time is 2.5 – 3 hours depending on traffic condition and number/duration of stop-overs).
⏺ Coordinate with GAMENEST for jeepneys for rent to reach Barangay Iba which serves as the jump-off. It is much better if you are traveling with a group so the expenses can be shared among the participants of the climb. You can also join organized hiking events to save on time and cut on costs.

I wanted to scale these three mountains because I’ve been meaning to test my stamina to do a day hike of three peaks. So I joined my friend when he organized a climb to conquer San Jose Circuit.

We left Manila at midnight and arrived at the jump-off by dawn. It was still dark when we commenced our ascent.

Mt. Kawayan was our first stop. I almost surrendered because of the never-ending assault. The trail was also slippery due to the rain the night before which made our ascent much harder. We took a breather and had our breakfast by the time we arrived at its summit.

📜✏️ Tips/Reminders:
📌Hiking these three mountains in one day is not advisable for beginners. The total duration of hiking the three peaks would take about 8 – 12 hours depending on your pace and number of rest stops.
📌Majority of the trail is exposed to the sun so bring enough hydration.
📌Minimize sun exposure by wearing arm warmers or long sleeves and hats/caps.
📌Check the weather first before scaling these mountains. Some parts of the trail get really muddy during rainy season.
📌Always observe the LNT principles.

The scorching sun was already beginning to roast us as we continued our trek. The heat made every step a struggle. It was hell, literally. We reached Mt. Bungkol Baka by noon and quickly took photos atop its summit.

I was already beginning to have second thoughts of climbing the third peak. I felt so drained because of the hot temperature. I was even close to blaming myself. But then I realized that a mountaineer takes pride in his achievement if he’s able to accomplish a hike that he started. Some of the joiners already gave up in finishing the circuit but the remaining climbers including myself braved the unlimited assault towards our last peak amidst the hellish weather.

We stayed for just a few minutes at the summit of our last mountain because it was so damn hot. The horrendous descent and trek back to the jump-off as the sun was about to set proved to be so exhausting. I just kept whispering to myself, “You can do it, Rye Pie” which sounded like a mantra in my subconscious. My ordeal was aggravated by my trail shoes giving up on me. It was about time to replace them with a new pair.

In case someone invites me to do a trilogy again of these mountains, honestly, I think I’m gonna pass. If the trails were only like a walk in the park, I would probably reconsider even if these mountains are way too hot. Conquering San Jose Circuit once is enough for me.
