What’s the first thing that pops into your head when someone asks you what to do in Baler? Of course, it’s none other than surfing. Then I joined one of these travel events which had a different approach to exploring Baler.

✈🛳🚌 How to get to Baler, Aurora:
⏺ Ride a bus from Metro Manila bound for Baler, Aurora (e.g. Genesis Bus in Cubao; travel time: 6 – 7 hours depending on traffic condition and number/duration of stop-overs).
⏺ Hire a tricycle to get to the tourist spots.

I’ve been to Baler twice but my first time was really unforgettable. My travel buddies and I had to pedal all the way to get from one destination to another. It was exhausting but I gotta admit, it was really fun. Sometimes, you just gotta take a break from the usual way of touring around a town or city, which is via tricycle or van.

The rain, muddy trails and cold weather also spiced up our adventure. It was 2014 and back then, I was not yet that physically active. Who would have thought I’d survive? Boy was I so proud of myself.

How could I forget that feeling of a sore bum? The tour would take a whole day (with rests every now and then of course) but pedaling while sitting on the bike’s hard saddle felt like forever. I’m not a biker so I don’t own any biking peripherals like a gel pad to cover my seat. The excitement of reaching our destinations just gave me the encouragement I needed to move forward.

Even if my lower body was aching on Day 2, I still got time to surf (sorry, I don’t have any quality photos of me surfing; these pictures were only taken using my old school Sony phone). It was my first time riding the waves. The swell of Sabang Beach is really perfect for first-timers like me.
