I invited my friend to go with me to Calaguas. I searched for an organized travel event because it would be expensive to do a DIY trip. Hiring a boat is costly for only the two of us.

It was one weekend in August 2014 when we got to witness Calaguas in the flesh. My high school classmate told me about the place and it was not yet a mainstream tourist destination that time.

We arrived early at the wharf in Vinzons. Before getting into our rented boat, our travel coordinator reminded us to buy huge plastic bags at a nearby store. We then started putting our stuff inside the plastic bags just to be sure in case the waves are rough. The island is facing the Pacific after all. Luckily, our travel was smooth and after approximately two hours, we finally docked in wonderland.

After pitching our tents, we quickly went by the shore and started taking photos. Boy was I so amazed by the turquoise water. I was really in awe because Calaguas really looked like a giant swimming pool even amidst the overcast weather at that time. This island back then was not yet fully developed and we were only two travel groups during our visit.

📜✏ Tips/Reminders:
📌The boat ride to get to Mahabang Buhangin takes about 2 – 3 hours but may take much longer if the sea condition is really rough.
📌You can join organized travel events online to save on time and cut on costs. Tour packages usually include food and tent accommodation.
📌Always check the weather first. Expect rain and rough sea condition during monsoon season (June-February) since Calaguas Island is facing Pacific Ocean.
📌Always observe the LNT principles.

Before sunset, we made our way to the nearby hill overlooking Mahabang Buhangin. We also got to see the other side of the island. Philippines really is a piece of heaven, I thought to myself.

After eating our breakfast the next day, we started packing up to get to our next destination. Our sailing started smoothly then came one of the most exciting moments of our trip. The waves. Good thing our bags were inside the plastic bags that we bought. It was fate that brought me to the front portion of the boat (I actually forgot that the rear seat was the best spot if you don’t wanna get wet) so I was really bathing in the never-ending splash of waves. The rollercoaster ride was still fun though.

Two hours had transpired in the middle of the sea then we had a stop-over at Quinamanukan Island which is near Vinzons Port. Just like Calaguas, it is also a piece of heaven. Its sand may not be as fine as that of Mahabang Buhangin but its golden color gives it a unique character.

After having our lunch in Daet, we capped off our weekend adventure at Bagasbas Beach for surfing as our side trip. Sadly, the swell was not big enough to ride on. We just washed up and changed clothes before our departure for Manila.
