When it’s the right month, the perfect time of the day plus the correct settings for long exposure photography, you get photos as jaw-dropping as this. This is undoubtedly one of my most favorite shots ever since I started my journey as an adventure artist.

When people hear about Surigao del Sur, they identify the province right away with Tinuy-an Falls and Enchanted River. But to tell you the truth, Surigao del Sur is not always about these mainstream tourist attractions.
Hinayagan Cave, Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, Philippines
I first saw photos of this cave from the Facebook post of one of my friends who lives in Butuan City. I was actually not aware of the best time to visit this cave. There was no light entering the cave’s roof in his photos. My friends and I were just fortunate enough to witness this phenomenon. Talk about being so lucky!

Hinayagan Cave, Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, Philippines
We were on our last day of our Mindanao adventure leg. We woke up early that morning. I was worried that the skies would rain on us because it was already drizzling when I peeked out the window. The atmosphere was the total opposite of the sunny weather that welcomed us the day before when we went to Enchanted River.

Our motorcycle drivers picked us up from Marky’s Hostel in Hinatuan and we drove from Hinatuan all the way to Bislig on our rented motorcycles. It was quite a long bumpy ride to reach our destination.

We first visited Kahusan Spring and an unnamed cave before heading here at Hinayagan Cave. Good thing the jump-off to Kahusan Spring is just a few minutes away from Hinayagan.

We didn’t break a sweat since the trek to the cave’s mouth was easy and short. It didn’t surprise me that the place was deserted when we arrived.

I was left in awe when we got inside this chamber. We were welcomed with this hollow dome with a wide opening on its roof. I’ve read in a few blogs that there is actually a second cavern but we were not able to explore it since we would need spelunking guides to accompany us.

The highlight of this trip to this cave was actually that surreal moment as the sunrays passed through the hole in the cave’s ceiling.

I quickly set up my camera and tripod. I was ecstatic whilst we took our shots of this natural wonder.

Only a few people know about this spot even though Surigao del Sur boasts of famous tourist destinations that get really crowded during weekends and holidays. So if you want an off-the-beaten-track destination, you may want to consider Hinayagan Cave.

I took a ginormous number of photographs as I was really amazed with how the cave registers in my camera with the right long exposure settings.

We were supposed to include Tinuy-an Falls in our itinerary but it was closed during our visit. Construction of a concrete road leading to the waterfall was underway that month. At least I was able to modify our itinerary and replace the waterfall with our exploration of Hinayagan Cave.
Tinuy-an Falls, Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, Philippines
My apologies for the quality of this photo. This was taken by my cheap action camera during my first Surigao trip in 2014. I was really looking forward to seeing this waterfall again and give justice to its beauty with my new camera. If only we were able to visit this waterfall during this recent trip of mine. There really are things that we can’t control even when we smoothly plan our vacation.
