MISAMIS ORIENTAL [Sagpulon Falls and Tiklas Falls]

Another waterfall has raised the bar for what could be considered as unquestionably grandiose. What I really love about Mindanao is its majestic waterfalls.

It was our last day in Mindanao and since our exit airport was Laguindingan Airport, I researched some side trips along the way. We just had our awesome beach adventures in Surigao del Norte and it was time to explore some waterfalls before our flight back to Manila.

The day before our waterfall adventure was allotted solely for our transit from Siargao to Gingoog City. We left Dapa Port early morning after our surfing session amidst the rainy weather. We then took the bus from Surigao City to Butuan then reached Gingoog in the evening. We were lucky that there’s a hotel near the city’s bus terminal.

The next day, we reckoned it was best to visit Tiklas Falls first before having our breakfast at the hotel.

We were expecting to be the first visitors because it was early in the morning. The place was deserted when we reached the registration area where we would pay our entrance fee. We didn’t even have to walk as our motorcycle driver drove us all the way to this waterfall.

Tiklas Falls is not as tall as the other waterfalls I’ve seen here in Mindanao but it still is a great addition to my portfolio.

I was quite surprised that this place is developed with a swimming pool for visitors. This must be jam-packed with tourists every summer vacation. We just captured some pictures before heading back to the hotel.

We filled our tummies prior to checking out. We hopped on a bus bound for our second waterfall for the day. Martial law had just been declared in May 2017 and that was June of the same year when we visited. We had to pass through countless numbers of checkpoints on our way to Cagayan de Oro City. Other tourists, especially first-timers in Mindanao may feel paranoia because of the situation but my travel buddies and I are used to backpacking so there was really nothing to worry about. Besides, checkpoints are quite normal in Mindanao even if there’s no imposition of martial law.

We asked the motorcycle drivers stationed by the junction going to Sagpulon Falls to take us to this waterfall.

It was supposed to be closed when we arrived. The heavy rain coupled with strong winds brought in pieces of garbage inside the waterfall resort so the staff were cleaning up. We had to use our charm so they would allow us to enter. We would just be taking photos anyway.

It wasn’t really a disappointment even if we were not able to take a dip because of its murky water since it rained the night before which made the current stronger. It was really fine with me. After all, the overwhelming height of this waterfall compensated for the muddy water during our visit.

Aside from the staff maintaining the place, there were no other tourists so we took advantage of this opportunity to get tons of shots without any photobombers.

We then agreed to head back to the national highway where we transferred to a jeepney that took us to Agora Terminal in Cagayan de Oro. The heavy traffic situation greeted us upon entering the city proper and we reached our destination early afternoon.

We had our late lunch first before we showered at the inn beside the terminal’s entrance gate. By sunset, we were already en route to the airport. It was time to go home.
